In New Zealand, historical sites are frequently targeted for rapid urbanization through the vehicle of demolishment.
Lost Heritage is an interactive exhibition about the demolition of historic sites in New Zealand. 15 200-piece wooden puzzles of New Zealand’s different neighborhoods would be placed on the floor for people to solve. Multi-faceted puzzle pieces that represent historical sites contain titles, dates of construction and deconstruction, and images offering different perspectives of the heritage area.
The demolishment of historic sites often subdivides lands and tears apart houses. The dimensionality of the puzzle pieces encourages the audience to handle and explore each piece. In putting the puzzle together, the audience is effectively participating in a sort of rebuilding and remembering of these sites once erased by urbanization.
