Fences, gates, fire escapes, and window coverings in neighborhoods along the Brooklyn/Queens border are often heavily stylized with ornate steel- and ironwork. This decorative infrastructure creates an expansive, distinctive visual system that serves as a strong emblem of the area for those familiar with it.
This hand-bound booklet of photography and short written pieces showcases the striking aesthetics of this metalwork while meditating on its deeper social and sentimental value as a symbol of Bushwick and Ridgewood. The writing in the book explores concepts such as sense of place, pedestrianism as a conscious cultural practice, and the routines of modern urban life.
