This project is an exploration of schizophrenic artists, featuring Richard Dadd, Yayoi Kusama, Agnes Martin, Aloïse Corbaz, and Louis Wain. These artists demonstrate how their institutionalization and diagnoses shaped their artistic practices, transforming mental difference into distinctive visual languages. As an artist who has been hospitalized for mental health reasons, this project is deeply personal. Researching these five artists revealed how they challenged art history's neurotypical canon, proving that their neurodivergence fueled their creative innovations rather than limiting them. Their work validates experiences often pathologized or dismissed. In learning their stories, I have reshaped the way I view my art and struggles. While making collages of these artists' works, including my own, I noticed that fragmentation, repetition, and visual intensity are themes that emerge from their unique experiences. By reframing schizophrenic narratives, I have come to see the beauty among the pain these artists faced.
